Winter of 2002 / 2003 - TAFFYDOME Project

This is a project we developed to provide Taffy with a covered practice area for agility training ... the specification we started with was the need for a covered area 100 feet long and 40-to-60 feet wide ... we priced traditional pole-barn structures, steel-span structures and fabric structures ... we chose fabric structures as the best alternative for our need and budget ... the fabric structure we are building is 100 feet long, 38 feet wide and 18 feet high ... 3,800 square feet ... we prepared a level site approximately 140 feet long and 80 feet wide ... the arch frame is made of allied galvanized structural steel tubing which has an outside diameter of 2.375 inches x 14 gauge pipe ... the building's arches are 3 feet on center ... the arches will rest on the ground ... along with the structure, we have purchased 34 ground anchors to secure the building from wind loads ... we calculate that a sustained 60 mile-per-hour wind has the potential lifting force of 20 tons across the entire fabric surface ... the duckbill ground anchors will provide a holding force of 50 tons ... the fabric cover is 10 oz. per square yard, rip-stop translucent fabric with a lifespan of 10-15 years ... this structure's end walls are 70% knitted shade cloth ... each side has an overhead fabric door ... this vented end wall design will work well for our intended purpose. Sandy and I thought we'd construct the building ourselves and track the project here on our web page ... delivered 12/19/02.
