Woodland Mushroom Cultivation Project - Spring 2002

On Memorial Day, year 2002, we planted 1,000 spoor plugs of shiitake mushrooms ... the plugs need to be inserted in a moist environment (25%-35% humidity) ... this can be a damp sawdust bed or cut hardwood timber from the previous winter ... the spoor plugs are moist and need to be planted as soon as possible, though should not freeze ... we felt Memorial Day was the right time period for our area ... note the first picture on the right, we lost 10%-20% of the spoor plugs in the first week after planting to wood peckers ... at this point in time we're not sure how many will make it ... from our perspective the wood peckers are good neighbors and they take priority over a horticulture project.
