A person's "center" is located between the belly button and the top of the pubic bone … and … halfway between the skin on the tummy and the skin of the back. This is a person's physical center, the dan tien. Women have a slightly lower center than men. The exact location is not as important as the visualization you develop in your mind. As with natural breathing, it is sometimes helpful to hold your hand over the location and practice in prone, sitting and standing positions. Practice while moving. Always try to stay relaxed and "breathe" through your center. Tai Chi, which translates as "dancing in tao", disciplines the individual to "drop" their consciousness to her/his "center" … this is the same physical center somewhere behind our tummy … in Tai Chi, movement should not be from the head or heart … rather … from our "center" or whole-self … whole-self movement increases Chi as the mind and body harmonize.
